Frequently Asked Questions About Reporting Recalls
Should I report a safety issue to RecallCheck or a government agency?
For product safety concerns, always report directly to the appropriate government agency (CPSC, FDA, NHTSA, etc.) as they have the legal authority to investigate and mandate recalls. RecallCheck is an informational resource and cannot initiate investigations or recall actions.
Can I report a product safety issue anonymously?
Most government agencies allow anonymous reporting, though providing contact information allows investigators to follow up for additional details. At SaferProducts.gov (CPSC), you can submit reports without providing your personal information. NHTSA and FDA also accept anonymous complaints.
What information should I include when reporting a safety issue?
Include the product brand, model number, serial number, and where you purchased it. Describe the safety issue in detail, including any injuries or property damage. Photos and videos of the defect are extremely helpful. If applicable, note when the product was manufactured and the lot number.
How long does it take for a report to lead to a recall?
The timeline varies significantly depending on the severity of the hazard and the number of similar reports. Critical safety issues may result in recalls within days, while pattern-based investigations can take months or longer. Government agencies prioritize reports based on the potential for serious injury or death.
